FAQs - Connecting to the nbn

  • Enter your address into our nbn address checker. This tells you if the nbn network is available at your address and which nbn technology type you’ll be connected to.

    You can also use our live nbn rollout map to see where the is in relation to your street and suburb.

  • In most cases, nbn co installs the nbn network at your home at no cost. For new homes that have never had internet before, there is a $300 nbn New Development Charge which you’ll need to pay.

    If you take up a Telstra nbn plan online, we waive the $99 connection fee.

    You can install your Telstra Smart Modem yourself for $0. Or you can get a Telstra technician to connect your modem and devices for a one-off fee of $240. 

  • If your property has not previously been connected to the nbn network, an nbn co technician may need to come to your address to set it up.

    You may also need a Telstra technician to help set up the connection inside your home. We’ll work this out once you place your order, and help to set up any appointments you need.

  • Once we've processed your nbn order, we’ll send you an order reference number via email. Use it to track your nbn order's progress with our nbn order tracker. 

    If you are moving to the nbn network for the first time, a Telstra or nbn co technician may need to do extra preparation work. If so, we’ll set up any nbn appointments you need.

  • Yes, the Telstra nbn satisfaction guarantee is our promise to you that if you're not happy within 30 days of connection and if we can't fix it for you, you can cancel with no further charges. Just return your modem if you leave before 24 months.  Read our nbn guarantee

FAQs - Superfast and Ultrafast nbn

  • Households that are on an nbn FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) connection can add Telstra Superfast nbn or Telstra Ultrafast nbn.

    Most households on an nbn HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection can add Telstra Superfast nbn, while some can add Telstra Ultrafast nbn.

    Unfortunately other nbn tech types aren’t currently eligible for Superfast nbn or Ultrafast nbn.

    To confirm your eligibility for Superfast or Ultrafast nbn, check your address.

  • Superfast nbn offers estimated typical download speeds of 215Mbps between 7pm – 11pm. Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring. Superfast nbn is for ordinary and personal domestic use. It’s available to FTTP and most HFC customers.

    Ultrafast nbn offers estimated typical download speeds of 250Mbps between 7pm – 11pm. Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring. Superfast nbn is for ordinary and personal domestic use. It’s available to FTTP and some HFC customers.

  • Superfast nbn is perfect for large households of 6 or more people using multiple connected devices. It offers:

    • Simultaneous working or studying from home, serious gaming, concurrent downloading and uploading of files, emails, web browsing and social media;
    • Or streaming a single Ultra High Definition/4K video, with other devices streaming HD or lower resolutions.

    Ultrafast nbn is the fastest connection for large households of 6 or more people looking to get the most out of multiple high demand devices. It offers:

    • Simultaneous working or studying from home, serious gaming with live stream capability, concurrent downloading and uploading of large files, emails, web browsing and social media;
    • Or streaming a single 8K video, with multiple other devices streaming HD or lower resolutions.
  • No, both Superfast nbn and Ultrafast nbn are flexible monthly add-ons. There’s no lock-in contract so you cancel anytime.

    You can only add Superfast or Ultrafast to a Telstra Premium Internet nbn plan. 

  • If you joined Telstra after March 2018 your Telstra Smart Modem will support Superfast and Ultrafast speeds.

    If you joined before March 2018 and you’re eligible for a Superfast or Ultrafast add-on, we will check your modem when you sign up. If we find it isn’t compatible, we’ll send you a new Telstra Smart Modem at no cost.

  • Important

    An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan. 

    The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™  tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds.     Plan prices

    Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons.  If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full, and you will receive a pro-rata refund for your plan charge for the remainder of your month.

    Speed Add-ons

    Typical busy period speeds for the new nbn tiers Superfast and Ultrafast are an estimate only. We do not have sufficient data yet to calculate the typical busy period speed of these add-ons. Actual speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring, For ordinary personal domestic use.     Installation

    Standard installation includes self-installation of your modem, eligibility criteria applies. Extra charges apply for non-standard installation of Telstra and NBN Co equipment and for premises in new developments.

    nbn™ New Development Charge

    In areas serviced by nbn co, Telstra may be required to connect services onto the nbn network. If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn network, nbn co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network. Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra or nbn co equipment and for premises in new developments.

    Telstra Smart Modem™

    Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage. Your mobile backup connection is capped at 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds may be lower due to local conditions and content accessed.

    Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels

    If you have a medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel, you need to register these services with nbn co by calling 1800 227 300. Medical alarms can also be registered online at nbn.com.au/medicalregister. It’s important to understand that registering these services won’t prevent them from being disconnected when moving to the nbn network. As well as registering, you must also contact your medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel provider to arrange the transfer of these services to the nbn network.

    Kayo offer

    For Telstra Personal customers taking up a new home internet service. Roll onto Kayo Basic standard month-to-month fees after 12 months unless you change or cancel beforehand. Must sign up to Kayo via Telstra at https://hub.telstra.com.au/kayo. Not compatible with any other Kayo offer or third-party billing platforms.

    If you cancel within 12 months, you will lose the remainder of, and cannot restart, the Kayo offer. Not available on Kayo One. Current Kayo One customers need to upgrade to Kayo Basic first to be eligible for this offer.
