SIM starter kit and plans

We offer two types of Pre-Paid plans, both with Telstra international calls included. If you call overseas from Australia often, our Pre-Paid Mobile plans, with their generous international call allowances will suit you. But if you only call overseas occasionally, our Pre-Paid Casual plan offers fewer minutes, but a longer expiry period.

Telstra Pre-Paid SIM starter kit includes a single SIM card that adapts to all sizes: standard, micro and nano. Once you've purchased your SIM starter kit, you can activate it on either a Pre-Paid Mobile plan or Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan and start making international calls.

International Roaming is not currently available for Pre Paid customers until Late 2022/early 2023.

Please note: Zone 3 destinations are not available to Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan.

How to get started on Pre-Paid

  1. Select your service
    Choose a plan with the international call minutes that suit you. Then add a new phone if you need one. Or BYO phone and choose a Pre-Paid SIM Starter Kit.
  2. Activate online
    Once your order arrives, activate your SIM on your chosen Pre-Paid plan.
  3. Choose your number
    You can transfer your mobile number from another provider, or get a new Telstra number.
  4. Add extra minutes
    If you’re running low on minutes before your recharge expires, you can add an international call pack.

  • With the current Telstra Pre-Paid plans - Pre-Paid Mobile plan and Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan - international calls are included in your Telstra Pre-Paid plan cost. Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile plan offers more international call minutes and destinations for those who need to call overseas often. Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan gives you fewer included call minutes, but offers longer expiry.

  • With Telstra Pre-Paid plan, you get capped international call minutes each time you recharge $30 and above.  With Telstra Pre-Paid Casual plan, you get capped international call minutes each time you recharge $20 and above. If you're still unsure about your international call minute inclusion, you can send us a message and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

  • No, you can’t rollover unused Telstra international call minutes.

  • A Telstra International Call pack allows you to add extra international call minutes if you run out before your recharge is due.

  • Our international calls are for calling international from Australia.

    International roaming is a service that allows you to use your Australian mobile while you’re outside of Australia and travelling overseas.

    • The Telstra Mobile Network offers 4GX in all major and regional cities and in over 1,600 towns and communities around Australia. In other coverage areas around Australia, you’ll automatically switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G. Check mobile coverage.
    • Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.

    Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile

    Unlimited calls/texts exclude satellite and premium numbers (e.g. 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (e.g. most 12xx numbers) and diverted calls. Roll over and access unused data when you recharge $10-$60 before expiry. Your unused data will expire if you don’t recharge on eligible recharges before expiry. For use in Australia.
