Change plan

Change your plan to suit your needs

We get it - Things change. That’s why we have no lock-in contracts, so you can change your internet plan once a month if you need to.

What type of internet plan do you have?

We have two types of internet plan - Upfront and post-paid. If you’re not sure which you have, you can check your plan type in My Telstra. Or choose your change option below.

How to change a post-paid plan

  • If you signed up to your internet plan before July 2021 and you receive monthly bills, you're probably on a post-paid internet plan.
  • To change your plan, check your address to see what plans are available then choose the right option for you.

How to change an Upfront plan

  • If you signed up to your internet plan after July 2021 and you pay via AutoPay instead of getting monthly bills, you're probably on an Upfront internet plan.
  • To change your plan, sign in to My Telstra.

We’ll check your maximum speeds later
At some addresses, we’re unable to check the maximum speeds at your address until you’re connected. While we don’t have the information at this stage, we’ll notify you of your maximum download and upload speeds once you’re on your new plan.
If the maximum speed at your address is below the maximum speed of the plan you’ve chosen, we will advise you of the options available to you which may include (i) remaining on your current plan; (ii) moving to a lower priced plan (if one is available); (iii) cancelling your plan at no cost (not available to upgrading customers). If your options include changing or cancelling your plan, you’ll receive a proportionate refund for the period you didn’t receive the full benefit of your chosen plan.

Frequently asked questions

  • You can change your plan once per billing month. Just pick a plan and we’ll switch you over.

  • Yes, your existing add-ons will stay on your account. You can add on other extras such as subscription services when you change your plan, and remove them anytime.

  • Changing your internet plan won’t affect your Foxtel service. It will still be available to you and will still appear on your account.

  • No, unfortunately we can’t carry any credit offers from one plan to another when you change plans.

  • You can check the status of your order here.

  • We’ve simplified our internet plans to better suit our customer needs. Our new Upfront Internet plans are flexible and transparent, with no unexpected call charges or late payment fees. Here are the key upgrades:

    • No lock-in, month to month plans. Our Upfront plans are month to month. This means you can change plan once a month or cancel it at any time – if you leave within 24 months simply return your modem in good working order within 21 days or pay a $200 non -return fee.

    • Simpler, upfront charging. On our older post-paid plans you receive a bill and your account is debited for the last month. On our Upfront plans, you pay automatically at the start of each billing period via our Autopay direct debit payment method.

    • We’ve added more to our plans, including 30 minutes of calls each month from Australia to standard international numbers as well as unlimited calls to standard local, national, 13 numbers and Australian mobiles.

  • AutoPay is an automatic upfront monthly payment that you set up with your nominated credit card, debit card or bank account. It’s like direct debit only in advance, and there are no bills: you get a receipt via email or SMS after payment. AutoPay is the only payment method for our Upfront Internet plans.

When you sign to an Upfront Internet plan, we’ll ask you for your bank account or credit or debit card details during the order and save them as your default AutoPay payment method. Then, on the same day each month, the monthly cost of your Upfront plan will be paid using that card or account. If your payment is due on a date that isn’t in every month (e.g., 31st), it will be paid the following day. Learn more about AutoPay

  • No, there are no Early Termination Charges if you cancel your plan. If you leave within 24 months, simply return your modem in good working order within 21 days or pay a $200 non-return fee.

  • Yes, our Upfront Internet plans include a home phone service, the same as our post-paid internet plans.

  • Information about your service

    Important

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.

The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™  tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. In some cases, the nbn™ tier figures and the typical busy period speeds are similar. Find out more about speeds on the nbn network with Telstra

    Plan prices

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons.  If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full, and you will receive a pro-rata refund for your plan charge for the remainder of your month.

    Speed Add-ons

Typical busy period speeds for the new nbn tiers Superfast and Ultrafast are an estimate only. We do not have sufficient data yet to calculate the typical busy period speed of these add-ons. Actual speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring, For ordinary personal domestic use. For important information on speeds see nbn key facts sheet (PDF, 81KB)

    Service Availability

Services not available to all areas or premises.

    nbn™ New Development Charge

In areas serviced by nbn co, Telstra may be required to connect services onto the nbn network. If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn network, nbn co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network. Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra or nbn co equipment and for premises in new developments.

    Telstra Smart Modem™

Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage. Your mobile backup connection is capped at 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds may be lower due to local conditions and content accessed.

Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels

If you have a medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel, you need to register these services with nbn co by calling 1800 227 300. Medical alarms can also be registered online at nbn.com.au/medicalregister. It’s important to understand that registering these services won’t prevent them from being disconnected when moving to the nbn network. As well as registering, you must also contact your medical alarm, lift phone or fire indicator panel provider to arrange the transfer of these services to the nbn network.
