Setting it up

Setup is super easy. The 5G modem connects wirelessly to our 5G network, so there are no ethernet cables or extra boxes. Just plug it in where you get the strongest 5G signal at your property, as shown on the modem placement guide in the My Telstra app.

A strong signal is indicated by the green light on your modem. The 5G modem will then connect with your devices via Wi-Fi. Follow the simple steps in our 5G Modem Quick Start Guide (PDF, 721KB).

Where should I set up my 5G Home Modem?

The placement of your modem is important to getting the best speed and performance.

You should try to set up your Telstra 5G modem:

  • In the optimal location shown on the modem placement guide in the My Telstra app. The guide includes a map and satellite view to help.
  • With a view out a window.
  • On a higher level if you’re in a multi-storey building.
  • In the open, not behind closed doors or in a cupboard.

A strong signal is indicated by the green light on your modem.

Don’t place your modem near large metal objects that may block or interfere with its signal, such as

  • refrigerators
  • microwaves
  • TVs
  • steel-mesh window security screens.

Connecting your devices

You won't need any extra cables. The 5G Home modem will then connect with your devices wirelessly. If you're not sure, follow the easy steps in our  5G modem set up guide.

What if I experience dropouts on 5G Home Internet?

Dropouts may occur if your modem is placed where the 5G signal is weak. Make sure you find the strongest signal in your home, as shown on the modem placement guide in the My Telstra app, then place the modem as close to a window as possible.

If you experience multiple dropouts, please contact us for help.

5G Internet FAQs

  • We don’t recommend running both your 5G Internet service and your existing home or business fixed internet service at the same time. This is because the two Wi-Fi networks can interfere with each other and cause device connection issues. Instead, we recommend you:

    • Unplug your old modem completely while you set up your new 5G modem
    • Try the 5G Internet for the first month and once you’re happy, cancel your existing internet service
    • Or, if you’re not happy with your 5G Internet, cancel the service with no extra charges, so long as you return the 5G modem to us in good working order.
  • We are expanding our 5G network footprint all the time, so please keep checking back on this page to see if your address has become eligible. Check your home address or check your business address to ensure you get the best experience, eligibility is based on both 5G coverage and capacity in your area.

  • You can connect any Wi-Fi capable devices in your property to the 5G modem, from PCs to laptops to set top boxes to smart appliances. You can also connect up to 4 devices via a network cable using the 4 ethernet ports on the 5G modem, and a USB device via the USB port.

Note: You won't be able to access your Wi-Fi network externally - so you can't change settings for the modem or access a local server set up in your property when you’re not at your property.

  • No. Your 5G modem is locked to your property’s location, which means you can only use it to access our 5G network while it is at that address. When moving you must cancel your 5G Home or Business Internet plan and return your 5G modem to us in good working order. You will need to purchase a new 5G Home or Business Internet plan for the premise you are moving to. Eligibility checks apply to determine if you qualify for 5G Home or Business Internet at your new premise.

Contact us to cancel and place a new order:

  • No. Whether it’s for home or business, the 5G Internet plan does not support a landline or fixed phone line service right now.

For 5G Home Internet plans, you will not be able to use this plan to make or receive calls, or support a home or medical alarm, or lift, that requires a phone service to operate. If you require a phone line, please contact us to discuss alternative options.

  • The 5G modem placement guide in the My Telstra app predicts the indoor coverage for your modem at the address displayed. It’s as accurate as we can make it, based on what we know.

Indoor coverage is highly variable and there may be locations where indoor coverage is indicated, but your device may not perform as expected due to local building density, physical structures and building materials.

For example, the following things may reduce or block indoor coverage: basements, lifts, underground carparks, concrete buildings, tunnels and road cuttings, steel framing and metallic window film.

It's recommended to place your modem within the optimal location at your address, as high as possible and close to a window.

  • To find the modem placement guide:

    1. Select Services
    2. Choose your 5G service
    3. Select Tips to improve 5G signal and then Optimise 5G signal

This will display a map illustrating the fair, good and optimal areas of your home to place your 5G Modem.

  • To move your modem, we advise unplugging it and moving it to the new location. There’s no need to reset the modem. When you plug it back in, your service should come online and your devices will reconnect.

5G Internet gaming FAQs

  • Absolutely. You can enjoy seamless streaming of apps like Netflix, Stan and Foxtel on Telstra 5G Internet. Xbox All Access also works on 5G Internet although you may not achieve the same levels of latency compared to a fixed line connection.

  • 5G Internet will work for the casual gamer – but if you’re a serious gamer or looking to host servers, then this probably isn’t the service for you.

If you’re not sure, you can take advantage of our flexible offer – get it, give it a go, and decide for yourself. If 5G Internet isn’t right for you, simply cancel and return your 5G modem in good working order.
